The Vatican Library Expands Web3 Usage with NFT Project

The Vatican Library recently announced a groundbreaking project to increase Web3 usage by granting non-transferable NFTs to supporters of its manuscript collections. This initiative, currently in an experimental phase, is exclusively available to Italian backers of the Vatican Apostolic Library.

Italian supporters have the opportunity to share the NFT project on their social media accounts until July 16 to receive a “Silver NFT” and access a selection of 15 manuscripts in high-resolution images. For those who choose to financially support the project, a “Gold NFT” will be granted, allowing access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the special collection.

In an effort to advance its Web3 initiative, the Vatican Library has partnered with NTT DATA, a leading Japanese technology company. Together, they aim to leverage Web3 advancements to connect with supporters and broaden the library’s digital reach. NTT DATA’s commitment to investing in Web3 infrastructure highlights their dedication to expanding their presence in the cryptocurrency world.

Located within Vatican City, the Apostolic Library is continuously evolving while preserving its vast collection of historic manuscripts. The library hinted at the possibility of offering virtual or augmented reality tours in the future, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and accessibility.

Salesian Father Mauro Mantovani, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the library’s heritage. The collaboration with NTT DATA plays a significant role in the mission to make the Vatican Library’s collections accessible to the public, regardless of background or beliefs.

The Vatican Library’s new Web3 project represents a continuation of its longstanding commitment to public outreach and modernization. With the launch of a modernized website in 2020, the library has made significant advancements in providing enhanced access to its digitized treasures, reaffirming its position as a global leader in historical preservation and digital innovation.
