In response to the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6, the Binance Women in Technology Academy has pivoted its focus to Hatay, a southern province significantly impacted by the disaster. The Academy conducted a comprehensive two-day program on March 26-27 in Hatay’s Antakya district, with the goal of empowering young female university students in the earthquake zone. The initiative aimed to equip these women with essential skills and knowledge needed to navigate the Web3 world, including topics such as financial literacy, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, NFTs, and cybersecurity. This move underscores the broader mission of the Academy to increase women’s representation in crypto, blockchain, and Web3, ultimately enhancing Turkey’s technological and economic stature while combating gender inequality within the industry.
Launched at the beginning of 2024, the Binance Women in Technology Academy recently celebrated the graduation of its first cohort. This initiative is designed to introduce young women to the technological realm and empower them with the skills to excel in their individual careers and make a positive impact within their communities. Zehra Öney, the Founding Chair of the Women in Technology Association, articulated the association’s mission and the significance of their efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake. She emphasized the importance of training expert and competent individuals in technology, as well as increasing the presence of women in the workforce, production processes, and entrepreneurship.
The commitment to redirect the program’s focus to the earthquake-affected area in Hatay, welcoming 80 female university students, reflects a dedication to both immediate disaster response and long-term educational empowerment. Harika Eldoğan, Binance’s Marketing Director for Turkey, shared the Academy’s ambitious goal of educating 5,000 women over the next five years. Eldoğan highlighted the importance of expanding the ecosystem in Turkey, particularly by involving young people and women. She emphasized the Academy’s support for women in exploring new opportunities, achieving financial freedom, and fostering growth in these areas. Additionally, Eldoğan stressed the importance of community-building within the Binance Women in Technology Academy, where women from diverse fields can connect, share knowledge, and learn from each other’s experiences.
Mücahit Dönmez, General Manager of Binance Turkey, reflected on the immediate actions taken following the earthquake, underscoring the region’s significance to Binance and the importance of supporting the affected communities. The Binance Women in Technology Academy’s proactive response not only addresses the urgent needs of the earthquake-affected area but also lays the foundation for long-term empowerment and inclusivity. By equipping women with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the technology sector, the Academy is driving positive change and creating opportunities for women to excel in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
