The collaboration between US developer Laguna Games and Crypto Unicorns DAO, which gave birth to the Unicorn Party, has come to a sudden halt. The Unicorn Party, a collection of games featuring the intellectual property of the Crypto Unicorns, was designed to attract a wider audience through simplified gameplay and reward systems. However, after careful consideration, the decision was made to discontinue the four titles that fell under the Unicorn Party umbrella – Bumpercorns, Mob Run, Unicorn Trivia, and real-money wagering features.
The initial idea behind the creation of these games was to appeal to the masses by offering easy-to-understand gameplay and rewarding systems. The vision was to blend real-money gaming with web3 gaming and make Crypto Unicorns accessible to all types of gamers. Unfortunately, the rapidly evolving landscape of Web3 gaming has rendered the original plan obsolete. Therefore, during a governance council meeting held on July 22, 2024, it was unanimously agreed upon (11-0) to cease funding for Unicorn Party.
Assets from Unicorn Party, including Mob Run and Bumpercorns, will be transferred to CU DAO for potential future development, with Laguna Games managing these assets. Team Surf will issue a comprehensive closure notice, urging players to refrain from depositing new assets into the games. On a brighter note, the relocation of Crypto Unicorns from Polygon to the Xai blockchain has breathed new life into the game and its community. This move has sparked renewed interest, prompting the company to announce its intention to bring a casual browser game like Rainbow Rumble, inspired by Fall Guys, to the Xai network in the coming days.
The decision to close down Unicorn Party and refocus on core strengths signifies Laguna Games’ commitment to capitalizing on the vast market for casual games. By narrowing its focus and streamlining operations, the company aims to strengthen its position in the industry. Moreover, the community and industry experts eagerly anticipate future developments, particularly regarding the migration of Rainbow Rumble to the Xai network.
The demise of Unicorn Party marks a turning point for both Laguna Games and Crypto Unicorns DAO. While the closure of the games may come as a disappointment to some, the companies’ strategic decision to realign their focus and pursue new opportunities signals a promising future ahead. With innovation at the forefront, the gaming industry can expect exciting developments from these industry leaders.
